My Thoughts On: The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess

Now in my reviews of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask I mentioned reasons why Twilight Princess disappointed me. Now Twilight Princess is the only Zelda game that currently out on the Wii and in my opinion the hype overtook the game. The graphics looked good and the game was made to seem so epic in scope. However for me the game did not live up to my expectations. Now to the games credit the story is great and the characters are really cool. Minda is one of the coolest new characters I have seen in years. She is coo,l in control, and is willing to fight. Minda is kind of creepy but in all of the right ways.

However the game has many flaws that I need to address and it is going to start with the items. Now my problem with the games items is that most of them stop being useful as soon as you leave the temple you get them in. The Dominion Rod is a great example of that. After leaving the temple of Time it instantly looses power and you have to restore its power just to move a cannon so you can get to the city in the sky. Then once up there its pointless again.

Another item that is such a disappointment is the Spinner. This really disappointed me because it was made to be so epic in the temple and that boss battle is as for as I am concerned the best one in the game. Using the Spinner to break its bones and basically playing Link Pinball was creative and fun. Sadly the Spinner is instantly useless as soon as you leave the temple. Now you do use it a couple times in the City in the Sky but as a whole its useless. The Spinner would be cool if you could use it as a form of transportation almost like the bunny hood if you could use it to speed your self up when you can't use your horse.

Then the Gale Boomerang is another rather disappointing item. Even though you still have use for it outside of the temple it just seems strange. It doesn't do anything any other Boomerang that has been used in other games it stuns enemies and brings you items. Once you get the bow and arrow you don't need to stun enemies and the claw shot will bring you items. Also it almost seems mean. There is a fairy living in that boomerang and your throwing it around like that I am sure it doesn't feel good. So those are the items that are disappointing but not the end of my complaints.

The fact that they ripped of a couple ideas from Ocarina of Time kind of bugged me. Lets start with the freezing of Zora's Domain for the second freaking time. Now this annoyed me is there nothing else you can do to fish people but freeze them. I mean if you super heated the water and boiled them that might seem like a bigger message then look their frozen. Ganondorf could have also stolen the water. It would have a simular effect as freezing it but might actually cause more problems for the whole land. However unlike Ocarina of Time we do get closure on the fact that they do get thawed out. Which is good but raises some continuity issues between Twilight Princess and Majora's Mask. Unless the Gorons in Termina and the Gorons in Hyrule are completely different then the Goron in the super heated rock should have drowned in Zora Domain.

The next theft from Ocarina of Time are hunting the four ghosts in the Arbiters Grounds. Now this is exactly like hunting the four ghosts in the Forest Temple in Ocarina of Time. This also ticks me off because I thought that part of the Forest Temple was fun and creative but they ruined it by ripping it off for this game.

Now this one rip off seems pretty origional but if you look at it you will
see exact similarities to Ocarina of Time. This is the Poe Soul side quest. I know your asking "Andy you incredibly sexy man beast how is this a rip off?" Well this is a rip off of the Gold Skulantula side quest in Ocarina of Time. The only differences are a couple changes. Replace the wealthy family with Jovanie and his cat, Gold Skulantulas with Poes, and the different rewards for one big one. Now I know you might think that is enough to prevent it from being a rip off well its not. Even the back story is simular the people in question were greedy and were cursed turning them into Skulantulas or a gold statue. So you have to go around and kill the Gold Skulantulas or poes and take the tokens or souls from the enemy. Now this is a rip off that they just shamelessly tried to hide but I caught them in the act.

Other then what I listed above I also have problems with one of the temples. The City in the Sky is annoying. I just don't like it the fact that its so easy to get lost and die the annoying Occoro running around. And requiring them just to get around is annoying. The Double Claw Shot is awesome I will say that. The boss to this temple is boring and uninspired (Oh boy a dragon never fought one of those before). Another temple that I dislike is the Water Temple. Its annoying and just as frustrating as the one in Ocarina of Time. However like the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time I do love the boss here. It is huge can captures the epicness that this game was striving for. Sure part of it is a rip off of Wind Waker but over all this boss is a lot of fun. Fighting in this giant underwater arena with an awesome looking eel like boss was just fun and it would call it a fish boss done right (Sorry Majora's Mask but this boss is better then your stupid fish)

I also want to address the graphics and character design. Now the graphics are really good for this game I like them however the character design annoyed me. First off Link looks like a girl in this game really not showing him as a manly character in design. Which is hard enough to do with a boy wearing tights but the face and the hair just made him look like a girl its not a big complaint but it is one. The next one was with the Shaman in his daughter falls under the same line with Link. The Shaman looks like a girl and the Daughter looks like a boy (However at her age that isn't unusual in real life.) It was confusing and took me a while to figure out if the Shaman was male or female. Another character that was designed strangely was the younger girl of the Ordon children (I don't have there names memorized) she looks kind of like a future whore. She already looks like a whore in the game and it just makes me uncomfortable. Then let us get to the freaks who are running the lake Hylia attractions. These guys are so weird the way they are dressed looks like someone lost a trunk of circus clothing that was meant for the girls. They are so creepy and the thin one looks the creepiest its just scary and I don't like them.

Now the last design flaw that I have to talk about would be the Occoro. Now the two of them you see most of the game are weird yes but not that bad until you meet the lot of them. Seeing these chicken people together is just wrong especially when they get the great lost race of sky people back story. This makes them creeper and then wonders why these freaks have so much power. Its just unsettling to me they are annoying and creepy making me dislike them.

Now is this game good? Well the answer is yes. Is the game as good as they were making it seem? No. I can't claim this is one of my favorite Zelda games or even on of my favorite games in general. Yes it has its good parts but it has bad parts as well. So those are my thoughts on The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.

  1. I personally don't see anything wrong with copying good stuff from older games, and adding a twist to it. It still fits the formula of fun, and is also nostalgic of the older games. Making something brand new that still fits the fun formula is getting harder and harder to do. As for items becoming useless after their designated temple, just thought to add that they do come in handy for some heart pieces. (btw, I too had trouble distinguishing the shaman's gender, lol)

  2. On one hand you are right. If something isn't broken you don't need to fix it but I do not feel like they took many risks with other then a full fledged story. I mean it had good ideas but I would have liked to see a game like Majora's Mask and Wind Waker. With Majora's Mask you have Ocarina of Time but completely different and was better off for it. Wind Waker introduced a completely new look and well it was beautiful. Now don't get me wrong I still love Twilight Princess I am currently in the middle of replaying it for a third time (Its been set aside for No More Heroes 2 which i just got from gamefly) either way thank you for your impute I like others opinions.
