Power Placement: #14 Power Rangers Samurai

Okay so it’s time once again to talk about another subpar series of Power Rangers.  This series is the first to come from Saban since Power Rangers Wild Force (Even though some argue that it is a Disney era), and Samurai is very back to basics for them. It is a lot like early MMPR.  No real story, and just a monster of the week format. Along with the MMPR format even the main bad guy  Xandred complained of a headache every five minutes. So let’s get started with the rest of this.

Here have a theme song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BghzkHyP_kk

So lets start with my opinion on the theme song....As you can hear it's a remix of the first theme...which is great puts it heads above other Power Rangers themes but is not as good as the classic. Maybe it's just the nostalgia talking but honestly it just doesn't seem as good. However I will say I loved hearing it played during big battles. It was great having two giant things fight and hear Go Go Power Rangers in the background.

This story rundown isn’t going to take long. Master Xandred and his Nighlok’s come from the Neitherworld, and enter this world from gaps. This means they can enter our world from any crack or space between two object.  I find this to be a cool concept, because I can’t think of any possibly way to fix every single crack and gap.  They want to raise the Sanzu River, and flood the real world.  Xandred is accompanied by Octroo, Dayu, and Deker who I will talk more about later....well I will talk about Octroo now....I hate that little guy he was annoying, useless, and started every sentence Ooh Ah Ooh.  I could talk about the Deker Dyau sub plot here...but I am going to wait until I get to what I like/ don’t like about the show.

On to the costumes...and I do like them.  I like how the costume’s torso is mainly the main color. I like the black and white slash that goes across the chest and across the neck.  This makes them look kind of like robes. I like the all black pants, the main colored boots, and the white gloves.  I like the belts but what I really like is the helmets.  I think the Japanese looking symbols really fit the over all theme and look good.
Who is my favorite Ranger.....well I would have to say the only one with Personality Antonio.  Antonio is the  Gold Ranger he was the only real ranger with personality he was fast he was strong and he was the tech guy. Then there are his flaws which included him making a ton of fish jokes (because he was a fisherman). He was Hispanic and kept trying to make that obvious by randomly yelling out magnifico or stuff like that.  Now these aren’t horrible things about him but it just kind of goes along with the acting and writing being sub par this season.

So who is my least favorite ranger....well I don’t like any of the rest of them but my least favorite is Jayden. Jayden had no personality outside of leader and was the only person who could stop Xandred.....OR IS HE! That’s right Jayden has a dark secret that will change the fate of the rangers forever....HE HAS A SISTER...who is also a red ranger. This secret is literally shown haunting him in a couple episodes even used as black mail, but whatever. To me Jayden was just a boring pretty boy with a dark secret. No personality, bad acting, bad writing, and a stupid pretty boy...least favorite ranger material if I’ve ever seen it.

Okay I am going to get what I didn’t like about this title out of the way. I didn’t like the rangers, I didn’t like the story, I didn’t like Xandred, I didn’t like Octoroo, and I didn’t like most of the Zords (They looked like they were made of Lego...and just looked ridiculous).  What did I like about it. Well one of my favorite things about this series was having Bulk back (even Skull at the end of the show).  Now Bulk was one of the best characters from the early days, and he still holds that perfection he had back then.  He is just as funny as he used to be. He was very enjoyable to watch and just see again in general. Also the cameo from Skull at the end of the season as very rich man had my nostolgia on overload. The next best thing was Deker and Dyau. They have a great back story and are actually very effective bad guys. Out of the two I would say Deker is my favorite. He is powerful, a great fighter, honorable (in an evil sort of way), and reminds me a lot of Nightmare from the Soul Caliber series. He has a very powerful cursed sword that is always hungry (Deker’s sword wants battle, Nightmare’s wants Souls.). Like Nightmare Deker was also once human who has been transformed into this monster form. Now besides all of that I like Deker because he is played by Rick Medina who also played Cole Evens the Red Wild Force Ranger. Dayu is a female enemy that shares a back story a lot like Deker. She was also once human turned monster. I won’t go into much about her...because I really don’t have much to say about her. Other then long ago human Deker and human Dayu (Named Dahlia) were once married and happy.  That lasted until Deker was dying and she sort of sold her soul to save his life changing both of them into Nighlok which also whipped Deker’s memory.

So it’s time to end this one. So I have to say this wasn’t as horrible as it might sound....but it wasn’t that good.  Not the best start to for the return to Saban, but what I have seen from Megaforce things look more promising. This was very much a call back to early MMPR. I am just hoping things get better from here. So that’s it let’s end this thing now. So long everyone reading I love you.

Power Placement: #15 Power Rangers Operation Overdrive

Alright everyone it is time for me to say I don’t like something that was made by people with more talent and who make more money then I do....YAY.....ahem...okay.  So it’s time to look at Operation Overdrive...which a lot of ranger fans see as the worst Power Rangers title...and for the most part they are right...I do think there is some good to this show....it’s just not much.

So let’s start with a look at the theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrA-VD5-540  .
I have to say I kind of like this theme....I mean it’s not great....it’s really repetitive, but the rap/hip hop sound fits the theme better then it did in an earlier series...but I will get to that one later. It kind of does what a theme should do be catchy..which it was that theme was stuck in my head long after I finished the show. GO RANGERS GO RANGERS GO GO GO......my word that was stuck in my head for weeks.  I would be mowing the lawn annnnnndddd.....GO RANGERS GO RANGERS GO GO GO....but anyway the other thing it does is gives you a small bit of the story. So in that it was effective.

So now let me tell you the basic story...which is easy. Two evil brothers Flurious and Moltar try to steal the Corona Aurora and it’s five jewels....which I guess gave you great power or something...you know this powerful item that is all powerful or whatever. So the brothers are looking for the jewels...so are the rangers....and then so is Miratrix who needs them to free her Master  Kamdor, then an alien shows up to help the rangers, then a couple creatures called Fear Cats join in the hunt named Mig and Benglo, and then the son of Lord Zedd and Rita show up...but I will get to that later.

Here is what I think of the costumes......EH. I mean they aren’t bad..I do like the helmets and the little accents on the costume....but over all eh. There is to much white on it. It just isn’t that great. So I am just going to move one.

Who is my favorite Ranger...good question...none of them really have much personality. So I guess it has to go with who is the coolest, and that is Will the Black Ranger....who is also Black bum bum bum...Now why Will, because he is the strongest, the best fighter, and actually takes on one of the Big Baddies on his own and winning. So I think that gives him the advantage over everyone else.

Now who don’t I like....everyone else. They don’t have much personality other then the one basic trait....and they aren’t likeable enough to pull it off. We have Mack who is the Red Ranger and just kind of the blank slate leader. Rose the Pink Ranger who is the Smart one.  Ronnie the Yellow Ranger...who despite her name is female, she is the extreme one. Dax is an “actor” he is the blue ranger...and is the comic relief one....and the finally there is the alien..Alex Mack....okay Tyzonn but you might as well call him Alex Mack since he turns into a silver goo.

What did or didn’t like about the show...I will start with what I did like....Okay I liked the Butler Spencer. He was funny helpful and a master of disguise. I liked most of the big bad guys.  Flurious, Moltar, and Kamdor were all enjoyable to watch.  The best thing about this series was the 15th Anniversary happened.  While it wasn’t as great as Forever Red..Once a Ranger was quite enjoyable. This one paid homage to rangers of the Disney Era and one from MMPR. To make this even better everyone they brought back (minus one) were rangers I loved. Most of them were my favorite ranger of the season. They had Bridge as the SPD Red Range (He was promoted from SPD Green), There was Tori Ninja Storm Blue....I wasn’t thrilled to see her, Kira Ford Dino Thunder Yellow (Played by the hotahotahota Emma Lahnna), Xander Mystic Force Green, and then on of my favorite classic rangers Adam Park MMPR Black (played by Johnny Young Bosch he was also Zeo and turbo green)...for those of you who don’t remember Adam he was the second Black Ranger after Zach (Walter Jones) left the show. Adam is my second favorite Ranger from the early era right behind Tommy (Jason David Frank).  This Disney Ranger dream team was brought together after Thrax..(who is the son of Rita and Zedd...which does mean the two of them had sex...excuse me as I vomit.) Thrax severed the Overdrive rangers link to the Morphing Grid (Which for those of you who don’t know is what gives every ranger the morphing powers.).  It is because of this that the new team of rangers are called to help. This is a great story in my opinion and even Tori is better then she was in Ninja Storm. I will also say this to the shows credit. The show took some silly ideas and actually went with them. The Power Rangers met Thor and Loki..and with how stupid it sounds...it was entertaining....stupid but entertaining.  However that is where the high points kind of run out.

What is wrong with the series....while I do like some of the big baddies of this series....there are just way to many of them. It would have been okay if they would have stopped at the brothers, but they just kept adding more to bad guys. at the end of the show we have 6 important bad guys not counting Thrax. Both Flurious and Moltor have there own foot soldiers the Chillers and the Lava Lizard. All of these characters just clutter everything up. The overall story is pretty meh as well. It’s pretty basic nothing really special just look for these stones that go to this crown and gives you power and stuff. As stated I don’t like the rangers. Especially the Alex Mack the Mercery Ranger.  I thought having a ranger who was an alien for no reason was pretty dumb...but whatever.

So let’s wrap this up with my final thoughts....skip this series...it’s not very good. Or even that entertaining. If you want to watch any of it go right to Once a Ranger two parter.  It’s the best thing in this season and the thing that bumps it above Ninja Storm. So that’s all I got for this review so it is time for me to....GO RANGERS GO RANGERS GO GO GO!!!......crap!

Power Placement: #16
Power Rangers Ninja Storm.

Alright everyone I it’s time to get started. As stated I will go from my least favorite Power Rangers Title up to my favorite one...so that means we start with Power Rangers Ninja Storm. As I stated when I posted my list I will talk about the theme, the story, the costumes, the best ranger, the worst ranger, and why I did or did not like the title.  So lets ride the storm out with Power Rangers Ninja Storm.

So what do I think about this theme song.....I really don’t care for it. Is it the worst theme....no. It has a good rock sound....but I am not a fan of the singing or the lyrics. The voices behind this song...just don’t exactly seem to care about what they are doing...and the writing just isn’t that good. However at least compared to some other themes it does at least fit the theme of the show. So that is a big plus.

Now onto the silliness that is Ninja Storms Story.....yeah this should be fun.  Evil Japanese Luchador Lothor comes from outer space to take over the world.......I want to hammer that silliness in....Lothor is a Japamese...dresses like a Luchador....and while born on Earth comes from space with evil ninja aliens he trained himself.  He decides to come and try to wipe out a secret ninja school that is taught by his twin brother (who is played by the same actor) who he hates. He manages to capture every ninja at the academy but 3, who are then made into the Wind Rangers.  So the hopes of the academy rest in the hands of the 3 worst students (At the time) Shane, Tori, and Dustin.  Thankfully they weren’t alone they had the Sensei....who was transformed into a Guinea Pig and his son Cam (Short for Cameron).  They will be joined but Blake and Hunter who were trained as Thunder Rangers by another academy (How many of these places are there?).  They were introduced as evil rangers (and made up one of the best stories in the series).  I guess Lothor said the Wind Rangers killed their parents (Lotor seems trust worth so I would believe that to.).  Later on they will be joined by Cam as the Green Samurai Ranger, but I will talk more about him later. However that is the basic story so I will leave it there and go on to the next topic.

So let’s move on to the Wind, Thunder, and Samurai costumes.  Which I actually like quite a bit. Having the primary ranger colors on the torso and legs on most of them and having the silver secondary color on the arms/legs (for Tori). I also like all the gold accents on the costumes. As for the Green Samurai Ranger his costume reminds me of Tommy’s Green Ranger outfit in MMPR. Okay now I am done with fashion....lets go on to the next section.

Who is my favorite ranger of Ninja Storm....Cam. I think this one is pretty easy of a choice. Cam is the strongest and the smartest of the bunch.  He has the coolest Zord as well as costume. He has the ability to switch to Super Samurai Mode where his helmet changed and he dropped his weighted vest making him stronger and faster. His wit, smarts, and skills in both fighting and computers made him a great character as well as all around great ranger.

So now the question is who is my least favorite ranger....and it’s Shane and Tori. I am not the biggest fan of Dustin as a ranger but like him as a character. I didn’t like Shane because he was a pretty bland extreme teen. The same can be said about Tori...however she did have more personality then Shane...and was better looking. She had a couple good episodes about her, but was still pretty bland.

Okay let’s wrap this up...why didn’t I like Ninja Storm. There are a couple reasons that I didn’t. First off I hate Lothor. He was a pathetic villain (A good fighter but pathetic none the less).  He was a lot like a male Rita. All he did was complain or yell about the people around him. He wasn’t very threatening or scary, and his whole motive seemed to be “I am mad at my brother.”  I have been mad at my sister before but I’ve never tried to take over the world from space because of that. The next thing is that the show didn’t take itself seriously at all. The bad guys were a joke, the rangers were a joke, and the head figure was a rodent. This is the first time the rangers didn’t know how to morph....and one of the series who denies the existence of Power Rangers as a whole...which unless Disney started off wanting their run by separating themselves from the series as a whole.  If not then it is very obvious that Power Rangers exist. Massive invasions of earth and the Rangers on the news should probably make that obvious. I didn’t like the characters that much as well. So all and all I hate this series which is why it is so low on my list.

So yeah this isn’t a great series or even a good one. So this is why it is so low. Nothing really works here and it just doesn’t do anything for me. So okay thanks for reading I hope this doesn’t suck to much, and wait for the next entry on my list that might be tomorrow if I remember haha.
